Excellent view into different cultures to the first millennium
Thorgils, the first-person narrator of the story comes as a child of a Greenlander and an Irish woman born. From his father he inherited the urge to always discover new places from his mother, the capacity of a seer. In the first book he tells the story of his youth and his diverse training (cross country, Christian and Celtic).
Although the text of the book back loudly proclaiming "" Viking - Odinn's Child gives historical novel writing a new dimension ". reminds the book but to the medieval stories by Bernard Cornwell (Arthur, Agincourt, Alfred, etc.). This is only meant as a compliment and should never be construed as plagiarism accusation. It's just a similar narrative style in a similar environment.
The many people are largely drawn lovingly, the personality development of the Thorgils is going through, given the circumstances presented credible and good. Similar to Cornwell Severin also never stays on the surface and always tries to shed light on several pages. Cornwell lays much emphasis on battle scenes, so this can be found here described much less dramatically - which is not to say that Severin would here turn their eyes to the horror.
Where is no light and shade. In the first hundred pages I was afraid of a wrong decision taken to haben, das Buch wollte einfach nicht in Gang kommen.
Cornwell erspart usn üblicherweise the details about the youth of his hero and has so but only to a certain extent, rightly so, for Severin's approach gives the person more background at the expense of voltage. For those who like
the Cornwells novels, this is a clear recommendation.
